Wing Unveils Latest Aircraft at EAA AirVenture 2024

August 12, 2024 by Miriam McNabb Leave a Comment

New 5lb Carrier Enhances Wing’s Drone Delivery Fleet

Wing recently showcased its latest aircraft at EAA AirVenture 2024, the world’s largest aviation event held in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The company, known for its innovative drone delivery services, used the event to demonstrate the capabilities of its new 5lb carrier drone, designed to streamline larger order deliveries.

Demonstrating in a Challenging Environment

During the event, Wing demonstrated its drone delivery service in one of the most challenging environments—the bustling airspace above EAA AirVenture. This demonstration highlighted Wing’s universal modular and lightweight setup, which allows the company to quickly create a nest in various settings. This setup has already completed over 400,000 commercial deliveries across three continents, showcasing its reliability and versatility.

“Our demonstration experience leverages our universal modular, lightweight setup, allowing us to easily create a nest in a range of settings and share our operations with more people,” Wing stated.

The event provided a unique opportunity for visitors to witness drone delivery in action, offering a close-up look at the new 5lb carrier. This aircraft is designed to complement Wing’s existing fleet, which primarily carries payloads of around 2.5 pounds.

Expanding the Fleet with a New 5lb Carrier

Wing’s latest addition to its Aircraft Library is a 5lb carrier, specifically designed to handle larger orders that do not fit on a single aircraft. According to Wing, 70% of all U.S. orders are delivered by one Wing aircraft, while 30% require two. The new aircraft aims to better serve that 30%, optimizing the company’s ability to deliver larger orders more efficiently.

“Just like different aircraft showcased different capabilities at the show, this aircraft is our 5lb carrier for larger orders,” the company highlighted during the event.

The new aircraft retains the same round-trip range of 12 miles and can cruise at approximately 65 miles per hour, all while carrying a standard cardboard delivery box with a payload of up to five pounds. This new model integrates seamlessly with Wing’s existing infrastructure and automation systems, ensuring a smooth operation within its service areas.

A Vision for the Future

Wing’s approach to drone development, known as the Aircraft Library, allows the company to quickly adapt its designs to meet market demands. The new 5lb carrier is a testament to this approach, demonstrating how Wing continues to innovate to enhance its drone delivery services.

“We’re excited to better serve our partners and customers with both aircraft. Wing intends to work with partners and regulatory stakeholders to introduce this new aircraft in our service areas within the next 12 months,” wrote Wing CEO Adam Woodworth in an earlier blog post detailing Wing’s plans to expand their fleet.

The introduction of this new aircraft aligns with Wing’s vision of implementing a multimodal drone delivery model, similar to how ground delivery services use different vehicle sizes for different orders. As Wing continues to scale its operations globally, events like EAA AirVenture provide a platform for the company to showcase its latest innovations and engage with aviation enthusiasts and professionals.

With its new 5lb carrier, Wing is poised to enhance the convenience of drone delivery for customers, allowing for larger orders to be delivered more efficiently in a single trip. As the company works to roll out this new aircraft within the next year, the future of drone delivery looks promising, with more people gaining access to this cutting-edge technology.
